It has been used for applications as diverse as scalable hierarchical particle algorithms for galaxy formation and accretion astrophysics, phase transitions in the early universe and their analogues in the laboratory, and data analysis from the spacecraft in the Solar-Terrestrial Probe Line. Beowulf clusters have been ranked among the top 125 world-class supercomputers. Beowulf runs on a variety of platforms (workstations, Win-tel PCs, Macintosh) and a variety of generations of hardware. It has been successfully demonstrated for heterogeneous parallel processing with hundreds of diverse platforms.

Reconfigurable Parallel Sorting and Load Balancing on a Beowulf Cluster: HeteroSort
HeteroSort load balances and sorts within static or dynamic networks using a conceptual torus mesh. We ported HeteroSort to a 16-node Beowulf cluster with a central switch architecture. By capturing global system knowledge in overlapping microregions of nodes, HeteroSort is useful in data dependent applications such as data information fusion on distributed processors.
متن کاملParleda: a Library for Parallel Processing in Computational Geometry Applications
ParLeda is a software library that provides the basic primitives needed for parallel implementation of computational geometry applications. It can also be used in implementing a parallel application that uses geometric data structures. The parallel model that we use is based on a new heterogeneous parallel model named HBSP, which is based on BSP and is introduced here. ParLeda uses two main lib...
متن کاملLoad Balancing in a Parallel Graph Reducer
Parallel graph reducers such as GUM use dynamic techniques to manage resources during execution. One important aspect of the dynamic behaviour is the distribution of work. The load balancing mechanism, which controls this aspect, should be flexible, to adjust the distribution of work to hardware characteristics as well as dynamic program characteristics, and scalable, to achieve high utilisatio...
متن کاملA Fully Parallel Framework for Analyzing RDF Data
We introduce the design of a fully parallel framework for quickly analyzing large-scale RDF data over distributed architectures. We present three core operations of this framework: dictionary encoding, parallel joins and indexing processing. Preliminary experimental results on a commodity cluster show that we can load large RDF data very fast while remaining within an interactive range for quer...
متن کاملBeowulf – A New Hope for Parallel Computing?
The Beowulf model for clusters of commodity computers[15, 17, 18] has become very popular over the last year, particularly amongst university research groups and other organisations less able to justify large procurements. The Beowulf concept is usually applied[16] to clusters of Personal Computers running Linux, but other platforms and operating systems can also be considered as providing simi...
